Delicious Alaskan Snow Crab Recipes to Spice Up Dinner

Shopping for fish can be difficult these days, especially for consumers who are trying to do right by the environment while still bringing home something delicious and affordable. Thankfully, many different fish populations are on their way to recovery, with particular areas of the oceans not even experiencing problems.
One of the best bets for a delicious and nutritious meal is Alaska snow crab. The icy waters off the coast of Alaska are a host to a thriving population of snow crab, many of whom migrate from deeper waters to shallower waters and benefit greatly from the fresh and unspoiled conditions in their feeding grounds. Better yet, the meticulously managed fisheries for Alaska snow crab means that this delicious and veritable protein source is in no way in danger of being over fished currently, making dinner a delicious and guilt-free affair.
Preparing snow crab is a relatively straightforward process, and those health-conscious chefs can rest assured that snow crab tastes equally delicious boiled or steamed. Simple to prepare, it's easy to class up any dinner occasion with minimal effort. Whether you're a beginner chef or seasoned professional, you can surely handle Alaska snow crab. Here are two recipe suggestions to get you started.
Zesty Cajun King Crab
Ingredients:
2 lbs Alaska king crab legs
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup beer (high quality brand, microbrew preferred)
1/2 cup chicken broth
4 cloves garlic
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
1/4 tsp thyme
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 lemon
4 cups rice, cooked
Directions:
Melt the butter over medium heat in a large skillet while cutting the crab legs into strips, about two inches in length each. Stir the butter to prevent it from burning, mixing in the four cloves of garlic, which have been minced, as well as the spices--black pepper, cayenne pepper, thyme, etc. Increase the heat and sauté ingredients together for two minutes. Add the Alaska king crab, chicken broth, and beer, bringing the mixture to a boil. Stir gently and cook for four minutes. Spoon crab and sauce over a cup of rice per person, squeezing a generous slice of lemon over each plate.
Old-Fashioned Alaskan Crab Bisque
Ingredients:
1 lb Alaska king crab meat
1/4 cup melted butter
1 quart milk
2 tbsp onion, chopped finely
3 tbsp flour
1/4 tsp paprika
Pinch of salt
Pinch of ground white pepper
Directions:
Prepare crab meat by breaking it into small pieces, being careful to remove any remaining pieces of shell. Sauté onion in butter in medium-size skillet until tender and golden, taking care to not burn either. Blend in flour, paprika, salt, and white pepper. Stir, then begin adding the milk in half-cup increments, stirring it into the mixture slowly. Stir until mixture thickens, then add crab meat and continue cooking and stirring for five to seven more minutes. Serve in bowl, preferably with a piece of crusty rustic bread.
